What is Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the first and best-known cryptocurrency — the asset that started the entire digital asset industry in 2009. Today it is the largest crypto asset by market capitalization and the most recognizable digital instrument in the world: the BTC price serves as a benchmark for the whole crypto market, and the network itself has been running non-stop for more than fifteen years without any central authority.

How Bitcoin came to be

The concept of Bitcoin was described in 2008 by a person or group writing under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto in the paper “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”. The idea was to create electronic money that works without banks or intermediaries: network participants transfer value directly to each other, and the correctness of every operation is guaranteed by mathematics rather than trust in any organization.

The first block was mined in January 2009. Since then Bitcoin has been through several market cycles, and an entire ecosystem has grown around it — exchanges, exchange services, payment solutions and regulated financial products, with the world's largest funds launching investment vehicles built on it.

How it works

Every Bitcoin operation is recorded on the blockchain — a distributed ledger whose copies are stored by thousands of independent nodes around the world. Transactions are grouped into blocks, and new blocks are added roughly every ten minutes by miners — participants who secure the network with computing power and receive a reward in BTC for doing so.

Issuance is capped by the algorithm: no more than 21 million coins will ever exist, and the miners' reward halves every four years — an event known as the halving. At the same time each coin is divisible into 100 million units (satoshis), so you can buy bitcoin for any amount — even a few dollars.

Why people value Bitcoin

Limited supply and independence from any issuer earned Bitcoin its reputation as “digital gold”: many investors treat it as a long-term store of value and a hedge against inflation. Public companies and investment funds hold BTC in reserves, and several countries recognize it as legal tender.

That said, it is important to remember that the Bitcoin price is volatile and can move significantly even within a single day. It is an asset with high potential and high risk, so it is wise to invest only funds you are prepared to hold for the long term and to weigh the risks carefully.
