What is Ethereum
Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization and the leading smart-contract platform. Where Bitcoin was designed as digital money, Ethereum is a programmable ecosystem: thousands of applications run on it, from financial services to games, and the ETH coin serves as the “fuel” that pays for every operation on the network.
How Ethereum came to be
Ethereum was proposed in 2013 by programmer Vitalik Buterin, who envisioned a blockchain capable of executing not just payments but arbitrary programs. The project raised development funding in 2014, and the main network launched in the summer of 2015 — it has been running continuously ever since.
The industry's largest developer ecosystem quickly formed around Ethereum. This is where the ERC20 token standard was born — thousands of assets have been issued on it, including the USDT stablecoin — along with entire sectors such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
How it works
The core of Ethereum is smart contracts: programs stored on the blockchain that execute automatically when preset conditions are met. They need no intermediary — the code itself guarantees the deal happens exactly as written. Users pay a fee (gas) in ETH for executing operations.
Since 2022 the network has run on Proof-of-Stake: security is provided by validators who lock up their ETH as collateral, and the network's energy consumption dropped by roughly 99.9% compared to mining. Ongoing upgrades continue to reduce fees and increase throughput.
Why people value Ethereum
The value of ETH is directly tied to the platform's usage: the coin is needed by everyone who issues tokens, uses DeFi services or transfers assets on the network. The more active the ecosystem, the higher the demand for ETH — which makes it not just a currency but a stake in the infrastructure of the digital economy.
Like other cryptocurrencies, ETH is a volatile asset: its price can fluctuate substantially. Investors should factor this in and avoid committing funds they may need in the near future.
